Security Hardening - Code Review Findings

This document summarizes all security improvements made based on the comprehensive code review.

Critical Security Fixes

1. Request Body DoS Protection

  • Issue: Unbounded request body on public auth endpoints
  • Fix: Added 1MB size limit to readBody() with proper error handling (413 status)
  • Impact: Prevents memory exhaustion DoS attacks on public endpoints

2. Header Trust Policy

  • Issue: Trusted X-Forwarded-Proto header weakened WebAuthn origin validation
  • Fix: Removed header trust, only trust actual TLS socket state (req.socket.encrypted)
  • Impact: Prevents protocol downgrade attacks

3. Path Traversal Protection

  • Issue: Overly broad isPublicPath() allowed extension-based matching
  • Fix: Added strict validation rejecting .., //, and hidden files (.)
  • Impact: Prevents unauthorized file access via path traversal

4. Atomic File Operations

  • Issue: Non-atomic writes to auth state files could corrupt on crashes
  • Fix: Implemented atomic write pattern (write to temp + rename)
  • Impact: Prevents auth state corruption, maintains system integrity

5. Session Management Race Conditions

  • Issue: Concurrent session modifications could cause data loss
  • Fix: Added withStateLock() mutex for all state modifications
  • Impact: Prevents session loss during concurrent requests

6. Input Validation

  • Issue: Pairing flow lacked format validation
  • Fix: Added UUID validation for codes, 6-digit validation for PINs
  • Impact: Prevents invalid input from reaching backend logic

7. Environment Variable Exposure

  • Issue: Sensitive vars (SSH_PASSWORD, SETUP_TOKEN) passed to PTY
  • Fix: Filter sensitive vars before spawning PTY processes
  • Impact: Prevents credential leakage to shell processes

8. Certificate Trust Verification

  • Issue: no-cors mode gave false positives for cert trust
  • Fix: Use proper CORS with origin validation
  • Impact: Accurate certificate trust detection

Security Enhancements

9. Corrupt Data Handling

  • Fix: Added try-catch for JSON.parse() with graceful degradation
  • Impact: System starts cleanly even with corrupted auth files

10. WebSocket Origin Validation

  • Status: Already implemented correctly
  • Verification: Confirmed origin header validation for non-localhost

11. HTTPS Enforcement

  • Status: Already comprehensive across all routes
  • Verification: Confirmed enforcement except for cert installation paths

12. SSH Endpoint Protection

  • Status: Already protected via auth middleware
  • Verification: Confirmed /ssh/password requires authentication

Code Quality Improvements

13. Test Coverage

  • Added: 16 new tests covering:
  • isLocalRequest() - 7 tests
  • readBody() size limits - 2 tests
  • Pairing validation - 4 tests
  • TLS module - 3 tests
  • Total: 134 tests (100% pass rate)

14. Constants and Organization

  • Extracted: Magic numbers to named constants
  • MAX_REQUEST_BODY_SIZE (1MB)
  • CHALLENGE_TTL_MS (5 minutes)
  • PAIR_TTL_MS (30 seconds)
  • DAEMON_RECONNECT_* constants
  • PIN_MIN, PIN_MAX (6-digit range)

15. Documentation

  • Updated: CLAUDE.md with comprehensive security guidance
  • Added: Expanded code review checklist (13 items)
  • Documented: All threat surfaces and mitigations

Verification

All changes tested and verified:

  • 134 tests passing (0 failures)
  • 26 test suites covering all modules
  • Pre-commit hooks enforcing quality
  • Full integration test suite passing

Summary

Completed: 20/20 tasks from code review Test Coverage: Increased from 118 to 134 tests (+13.6%) Security Rating: All critical and high-severity issues resolved Code Quality: Improved organization, constants, and documentation

The codebase now has comprehensive security hardening with proper input validation, atomic operations, race condition prevention, and thorough test coverage.
